DESCRIPTION:Black Awareness Day\n  \nIn Brazil\, Black Awareness Day or better known as Black Consciousness Day (Portuguese: Dia da Consciência Negra) is observed annually on November 20 as a day “to celebrate a regained awareness by the black community about their great worth and contribution to the country”. \nBlack Awareness Day has been celebrated since the 1960s and has amplified its events in the last few years. Originally\, it was celebrated on May 13 (the date of abolition of slavery in Brazil). It was later moved to November 20 to honour Zumbi’s death\, and is sometimes called Zumbi Day. It is an official state holiday in Alagoas\, Amazonas\, Amapá\, Mato Grosso\, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro\, and marked elsewhere by multiple city councils. \nSource: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Awareness_Day \n  \nHISTORY OF BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS DAY\nOriginally\, Black Consciousness Day was celebrated on May 13 — the day when slavery was officially abolished in Brazil. It was moved to November 20 in honor of a Black hero\, which amplified the day’s historical significance. \nZumbi dos Palmares was a Brazilian of Kongo origin and a leader of one of the ‘quilombos’ — a figurative settlement consisting of enslaved Africans having escaped their brutal masters. Zumbi was a freedom fighter and a legendary Black hero. He was given to Portuguese slavery at the vulnerable age of six and escaped nine years later\, returning to Palmares (where he was born) and immediately launched an anti-slavery campaign against Portuguese oppression. \nThe campaign did wonders for enslaved Black communities\, including helping accommodate runaway slaves and other minorities who were subjected to oppression. Zumbi was so brave and vigilant that many followers considered him immortal. However\, betrayed by one of his own\, he was finally captured by the Portuguese on November 20\, 1695\, immediately beheaded\, and displayed as a warning sign for rebellious slaves. \nBlack Consciousness Day has been celebrated since the 1960s\, highlighted with cultural\, sociopolitical\, and academic activities including public protests against inequality\, discrimination\, and racism. Later on\, the day was moved to November 20 in honor of Zumbi’s death\, the national hero who lives as a symbol of the struggle of slaves. DESCRIPTION:Afro-Argentinian Day\n  \nSince 2013\, November 8 has been celebrated as the National Day of Afro-Argentines and African Culture. The date was chosen to commemorate the recorded date for the death of María Remedios del Valle\, a rabona and guerrilla fighter\, who served with the Army of the North in the war of Independence. \nThe National Institute Against Discrimination (INADI) is the public body responsible for combating discrimination and racism. In 2021\, the Argentine government announced the establishment of a “Afro-Argentine Community Federal Advisor Council”\, made up of prominent Afro-Argentine activists and scholars. \nThe national holiday is being viewed as a victory for the nation’s Black Movement\, which has spent decades campaigning against the notion that there either are no Black people in Argentina or that those Blacks found in Argentina do not have a long history in the nation. Today\, there are an estimated 2 million people of African descent in Argentina of various ethnicities\, including Afro-Argentineans\, Cape Verde Argentineans\, and many West and Central African immigrants. As recently as 2010\, the national census for the first time included questions that allowed citizens to identify themselves as people of African descent. DESCRIPTION:World Mental Health Day: October 10\, 2024 🌍🧠\nMental health affects every aspect of our lives—it encompasses our emotional\, psychological\, and social well-being. It influences how we handle stress\, relate to others\, and make decisions. From childhood to adulthood\, maintaining good mental health is essential to living a balanced and healthy life. Yet in the Black community\, mental health challenges are often accompanied by stigma and barriers that prevent people from getting the support they need. \nWhy is mental health so important? For the Black community\, research shows that we are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems\, such as Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Young Black adults (ages 18-25) face even greater challenges\, with higher rates of mental health issues but lower rates of access to services compared to their White counterparts. The need for compassionate care and culturally sensitive resources has never been more critical. \nThis year’s theme\, “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right\,” emphasizes that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care—no matter their background or experiences. For many in our community\, this means addressing the unique stresses that come with systemic racism\, discrimination\, and economic inequality. It also means challenging the stigma that still surrounds mental health issues in the Black community. 🌱✨ \nAt Support Black Charities (SBC)\, part of our mission is to empower Black-led organizations that work tirelessly to support the mental health of individuals\, families\, and caregivers. These organizations are not just providing essential services\, but they’re fostering a culture of understanding\, healing\, and community care. While some progress has been made at legislative\, policy and institutional levels\, people of African descent continue to suffer intersectional and compounded forms of racial discrimination\, marginalization\, and exclusion. Five years into the Decade\, the COVID-19 pandemic shed light on the urgency to address long standing structural inequalities and systematic racism in health. The lack of recognition remains one of the major barriers impeding the full and effective enjoyment of human rights by people of African descent. \nHonoring the contributions of the African diaspora\nThe International Day for People of African Descent will be celebrated for the first time on 31 August 2021. Through this Observance the United Nations aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent. \nInternational days reflect the values that society shares. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and have the potential to contribute constructively to the development and well-being of their societies. Any doctrine of racial superiority is scientifically false\, morally condemnable\, socially unjust\, and dangerous and must be rejected\, together with theories that attempt to determine the existence of separate human races. \nThe United Nations strongly condemns the continuing violent practices and excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies against Africans and people of African descent and condemns structural racism in criminal justice systems around the world. DESCRIPTION:Jamaican Independence Day\nJamaica Independence Day is celebrated on August 6 annually. This day became a national celebration in 1962 when Jamaica became independent with full dominion status in the Commonwealth\, under a constitution that retained the British monarch as head of state. The first elected Prime Minister was Alexander Bustamante. \nJamaica’s independence meant that Britain no longer controlled the country’s affairs. Thus\, these became primarily managed by the new Prime Minister and his locally elected cabinet.
