August honors Black Philanthropy; it is the most important month of the year for Black organizations and especially for Support Black Charities.
Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) was created in 2011 by founding members of the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet). BPM is commemorating their 10th year with the theme “TENacity, making equity real.”
Its ultimate purpose is centered on promoting philanthropy, defined as the giving of time, talent and treasure, among and for people of African & Caribbean descent with the goal of enhancing the quality of life within Black communities. (For more information on its history and other important dates, please check out last year’s August Blog “Why is August so important for the Black Community”.)
One of SBC’s roles is to advocate for Black focus organizations worldwide which is why we are sharing these important dates with our audience:
- August 1st-30th: Black Philanthropy Month – 10thyear
- August 1st: National Minority Donor Awareness Day – organ donor
- August 17th: National NonProfit Day
- August 28th: Black Giving Day also known as Give 8/28 – Give828.org
This year, we thought we’d share ideas on how Black organizations, supporters and allies can best support, celebrate, participate or contribute to the significance of this month.
For Black Organizations:
- This is the time to shine, raise awareness about these dates and use the narrative to reintroduce the organization’s mission, the team, the impact on the community as well as their needs going forward. This can help solicit specific support based on their current and future plans in terms of volunteering, item donations or fundraising objectives.
- Create a special fundraising event on August 28 to incite your supporters to be part of history and join the collective in participating in Black Giving Day. Check out Give828.org for ideas.
- Use these Social Media #Hashtags to attract more attention and benefit from the attention generated by the narrative.: #BlackGivingIsMagic, #GivingBlack, #giveblack, #blackgiving, #BlackGivingDay #Give828 #BLM, #BlackNonProfit, #BlackPhilanthropy #BlackExcellence, #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, #BPM, #BPM2021, #BPM365.

For Supporters & Allies
- Take the time to get to know the organizations that are active in your city or neighborhood (use SBC’s online directory).
- Find a volunteer opportunity to explore a passion of yours and make a difference in someone’s life whether in person or virtually.
- Join a giving circle or sign up to be a member of a giving platform similar to 1ForGood or Troop to discover, contribute and fulfill local needs.
- Show your support by using Social Media to engage with organizations that aligns with your interests and passion. Like, share, repost, retweet, comment on relevant posts. It shows your interests and lets your network know which organizations or causes you support.
- Contribute to specific donor advised funds dedicated to the black community to take advantage of collective impact of giving.
Here are a few examples (click on the link for more details):
- Black Student in Canada Fund
- Black Community Support Fund
- Black Community Housing Fund
- Black Opportunity Fund

*** SBC is working on publishing a vetted list of these types of funds later this year. Please click here to subscribe to our monthly Newsletter and stay up to date with opportunities to make a difference.
Everyone can also participate, celebrate or contribute by attending some of the virtual events happening throughout the month. Whether you are an organization, a supporter or an ally, August is a time for us to pool our resources together with the intent of leading social change and invest in ourselves and our communities.
