BRIEF HISTORY

In 2017, Support Black Charities was just a concept in the Founder’s imagination.  After volunteering and supporting many Black serving organizations, she knew she wanted to create her own organization. However, she couldn’t decide on which sector to really focus on such as women, youth, students or young professionals.

The idea came from a previous side hustle where the founder, Anick, was helping organizations fundraise online with a retailer. As the only black person in the start-up company, Anick decided to support by reaching out to Black-led, Black focus or Black serving (B3) organizations in Canada. She found it difficult to find them online on Google/Bing if they didn’t have the words “Black”, “African”, “Afro” or “Caribbean” in their names.  She started digging and using social media to find them. Pretty soon, she had a long list organized by location, category, status, beneficiary, need, social impact and location. In Canada she found out a lot of organizations were based there but benefited a community abroad or “back home”.

Soon her friends started coming to her asking for where to donate or volunteer. Anick played matchmaker and directed them to organizations based on their passion or interests and preferred location. As the improvised list grew bigger and the requests more frequent, it became obvious that she needed to make it available and easy for individuals to find Black organizations to support.

Inspired by the popularity and the growing movement to support Black Businesses, Anick, along with some friends, started working on an online directory model. In 2018, SupportBlackCharities.org was born. Five years later, the dream is still alive!

Today, we have shifted our focus to being more than just a directory, we want to inspire compassion and empathy for others. Also frustrated by the constant unfair and unsolicited negative views about the Black community, we wanted to highlight the work and people having an amazing impact on the global Black community and its vibrant diaspora.

It has been an unbelievable validating experience to be in constant conversation and connecting with so many supporters, potential donors, business leaders and Black organization leaders from all over the world.

Come along for the ride. Join the movement to elevate our community as a supporter or a Black serving organization!
