What is Black History Month?
Black History Month (BHM), also known as African American History Month, is an annual observance that honours the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black people throughout history. In North America, it is recognized in February. The month was chosen because it includes the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two figures widely referenced in the history of Black freedom and equality movements.
Black History Month was created because Black history was often left out of classrooms, books, and mainstream narratives. It exists to ensure that Black contributions are recognized as essential, not optional.
Why it matters today: Black history is still being made. Black-led organizations are continuing the work through community care, youth empowerment, education, health, arts, advocacy, and systems change. Supporting these organizations is one of the clearest ways to honour Black history in real time.

Why SBC Talks About Black History Month
At Support Black Charities, Black History Month is not only about celebration. It is about visibility, sustainability, and action.
SBC exists because representation in the nonprofit ecosystem determines who gets seen, funded, and sustained. Too many Black-led organizations are doing essential work without the visibility and support they deserve.
During Black History Month, we focus on helping individuals, groups, and businesses:
- Discover vetted Black-led and Black-serving organizations
- Learn how community impact connects to history
- Support organizations through donations, partnerships, volunteering, and sharing
- Stay engaged beyond February
Do you know what you’re doing yet?
If you are not sure how to participate in Black History Month 2026, you are not alone. Every year, we receive messages from people and businesses asking:
- Where can I donate to create real Black-led impact?
- What events can I attend in my city?
- How do I support without being performative?
- How do I stay engaged beyond one month?
This is your starting point. We will be adding more resources throughout the month.
