National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

This month, we celebrate the progress made in treating Americans suffering from SCD and we stand together to improve the health of those living with this disease.

In an effort to raise awareness, burgundy has been selected as the representative color to help shed light on sickle cell disease throughout the area.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects millions of people throughout the world and is disproportionally affecting people of African and Caribbean heritage.

In the USA, statistics show that :

• SCD affects approximately 100,000 Americans.
• SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births.
• SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.
• About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT).
