Support Black Charities (SBC) is a Canadian-based registered nonprofit based in Toronto, Ontario, with a national and international reach. SBC focuses on increasing online visibility, boosting charitable giving, and providing essential resources to Black-led organizations. The organization offers various programs and services to support Black organizations in becoming sustainable, self-sufficient, and empowered to create generational impact.

Board of Directors Role Description:

Support Black Charities (SBC) is excited to expand our Board of Directors in 2025! We are seeking five dedicated volunteer board members with expertise in Finance, Fundraising, Governance & Leadership, Legal & Compliance, and Marketing & Public Relations to help shape the future of our organization.

Each board member will play a key role in advancing SBC’s mission to support Black-led nonprofits by providing essential resources, increasing visibility, and fostering sustainable growth. These are remote volunteer positions requiring strategic expertise, leadership, and a commitment to supporting Black charities.

Available Board Roles (5):

📊 Finance Expert

  • Provide strategic financial oversight, budgeting guidance, and risk management support.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and best practices.
  • Develop financial strategies for long-term sustainability and diversified funding.

💸 Fundraising Expert

  • Lead the development of fundraising strategies and donor engagement plans.
  • Cultivate relationships with major donors, sponsors, and grant providers.
  • Support SBC in reaching annual fundraising goals and diversifying revenue streams.

🏛 Governance & Leadership Expert

  • Strengthen SBC’s Board governance, policies, and leadership structures.
  • Guide Board development, succession planning, and strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure the organization adheres to best practices in nonprofit governance.

⚖️ Legal & Compliance Expert

  • Ensure SBC complies with nonprofit regulations, tax laws, and ethical standards.
  • Provide legal oversight on governance policies, contracts, and risk management.
  • Support the Board and leadership in upholding ethical decision-making.

📢 Marketing & Public Relations Expert

  • Develop and guide SBC’s marketing, branding, and public relations strategies.
  • Enhance the organization’s visibility, engagement, and digital presence.
  • Support fundraising and awareness campaigns through strategic communications.

Responsibilities:

  • These volunteer board members will provide financial oversight, fundraising leadership, governance and policy guidance, legal compliance support, and marketing expertise to enhance SBC’s visibility and impact. Together, they will ensure fiscal responsibility, ethical governance, diversified funding, regulatory adherence, and effective public engagement, empowering Black-led nonprofits for long-term success.

Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidates should have a strong background in their respective fields, a deep understanding of nonprofit operations, and a passion for supporting Black-led organizations. Board members should possess strategic thinking, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively. Prior board experience is an asset but not required. A commitment to SBC’s mission, diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential, along with the willingness to contribute expertise, attend meetings, and actively support the organization’s growth and impact.

Expectations for SBC Board Members:

When joining the Support Black Charities (SBC) Board of Directors, each member is expected to contribute their expertise, leadership, and strategic guidance to ensure the organization’s success and sustainability. Below are the key expectations for all Board members:

Active Participation & Commitment:

  • Serve a 2-year term and remain actively engaged in Board activities.
  • Attend regular Board meetings (frequency determined by SBC bylaws) and actively participate in discussions and decision-making.
  • Join and contribute to at least one Board committee related to their area of expertise.

Strategic Leadership & Guidance:

  • Provide expert advice and insights in their respective fields (Finance, Fundraising, Governance & Leadership, Legal & Compliance, or Marketing & Public Relations).
  • Support SBC’s strategic planning, sustainability efforts, and long-term growth initiatives.
  • Offer mentorship to SBC’s leadership and assist in building organizational capacity.

Fundraising & Financial Stewardship:

  • Help identify funding opportunities, cultivate donor relationships, and support fundraising campaigns.
  • Make a personal contribution to SBC’s fundraising efforts by leveraging professional networks to secure resources.

Governance & Compliance:

  • Uphold nonprofit governance best practices and ensure SBC operates within ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.
  • Review and help improve organizational policies, financial oversight, and risk management frameworks.

Advocacy & Community Engagement:

  • Act as an ambassador for SBC, promoting its mission and programs within professional and community networks.
  • Leverage relationships to foster strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring SBC’s initiatives align with community needs.

Marketing & Visibility:

  • Assist in increasing SBC’s brand awareness through public relations, media engagement, and digital outreach.
  • Support marketing campaigns, event promotions, and community storytelling to highlight SBC’s impact.

Accountability & Impact Measurement:

  • Regularly evaluate SBC’s progress, impact, and effectiveness to ensure alignment with its mission.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement.
