BLACK PHILANTHROPY MONTH 2025
Did you know August is Black Philanthropy Month?
Now you do, and there’s something you can do to get involved!
Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), founded by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland with the support of Reunity (formerly the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network), is a global movement launched in 2011 in recognition of the UN Decade for People of African Descent.
Celebrated every August, BPM is a powerful call to action encouraging the Black community — and allies — to recognize, invest in, and amplify the impact of Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-focused (B3) organizations worldwide. Since its inception, it has reached over 19 million people across 60+ countries and is now recognized by 35+ governments and organizations, including the United Nations.
Since 2024, Black Philanthropy Month is now powered by BackBlack.
What Is Black Giving Day?
August 28th — also known as Give 8/28 — is a special fundraising day led by the Young Black and Giving Back Institute to celebrate and fundraise for Black-led nonprofits in the U.S.
Why August 28 matters:
- 1955 – Emmett Till’s murder ignited the Civil Rights Movement
- 1963 – Dr. King delivered “I Have a Dream”
- 2005 – Hurricane Katrina devastated Black communities in New Orleans
- 2008 – Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for U.S. President
The Role of Philanthropy in the Black Community
- Strengthens the Black ecosystem by building sustainability
- Encourages circulating the Black dollar within the community
- Connects people, businesses, and organizations for collective impact
- Provides solutions where systems fall short
