What Is Black Philanthropy Month?
Black Philanthropy Month, also called BPM, is a global celebration and action campaign held every August. It recognizes the long tradition of giving in Black communities and encourages people, nonprofits, businesses, foundations, and allies to invest in Black-led change.
Black philanthropy is more than money. It includes volunteering, mentoring, mutual aid, sponsorship, advocacy, storytelling, community investment, professional services, and opening doors to opportunity.

The theme reminds us that Black philanthropy does not belong to one person, organization, country, or kind of donor. It is strengthened by many people working toward a shared purpose.
You can donate, volunteer, mentor, sponsor a program, share a story, open a door, provide expertise, or introduce an organization to a potential partner. Every voice and every action can help move the movement forward.

A New Chapter for Black Philanthropy Month
Black Philanthropy Month was founded by Dr. Jacqueline Bouvier Copeland. Its roots reach back to 2001, and it became an official global campaign in 2011.
Dr. Copeland appointed Floyd Jones as Global Chair. Black Philanthropy Month’s operations have now officially come together under the BackBlack Movement, founded by Floyd Jones.
BackBlack works to direct capital, strengthen capacity, build community, create connections, and increase visibility for Black-led nonprofits and changemakers.

Use August to increase visibility, deepen relationships, and strengthen fundraising.
- Create a clear Black Philanthropy Month fundraising campaign.

BackBlack’s current funding opportunities are mainly for U.S.-based Black-led 501(c)(3) nonprofits or eligible fiscally sponsored organizations. Eligibility varies, so review every opportunity before applying. Organizations must be verified in the BackBlack Directory before accessing BackBlack funding and resources.

Resources and Funding for Black-Led Nonprofits
BackBlack: Get Listed, Get Ready and Check Funding
BackBlack now leads Black Philanthropy Month and connects Black-led nonprofits with visibility, fundraising tools, directory access, partners, and funding opportunities.
Who should use these funding resources?
Most current BackBlack funding opportunities are for U.S.-based Black-led 501(c)(3) nonprofits verified as Black-led and Black-benefiting. Eligible fiscally sponsored Black-led community organizations may also qualify for some opportunities. Requirements can differ, so always read the eligibility rules for the specific grant or campaign.
1. Join the Directory
BackBlack says organizations must be listed and verified in its directory before accessing its funding and resources. Verification normally takes 2–3 business days.
2. Build Your Campaign
Use the 2026 Nonprofit Fundraising Playbook for social media, email, storytelling, donor communications, and campaign ideas.
3. Check Funding
Review current matching funds, grants, local giving campaigns, and other opportunities. Deadlines and requirements vary.
4. Apply for the Impact Grant
Four Black-led nonprofits will receive $5,000 each, for $20,000 in unrestricted funding. Submit an eligible August campaign by August 31, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
2026 BackBlack Impact Grant: Key Details
- Four unrestricted grants of $5,000 each.
- The organization must be a Black-led nonprofit verified in the BackBlack Directory.
- A fundraising campaign must be active and accepting donations on an online platform at some point during August 2026.
- There is no minimum amount that must be raised.
- No separate grant proposal or project budget is required.
- Applications close August 31, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

8:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time
Give 8/28 is a U.S. national online giving day focused on Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits. It was founded by the Young, Black & Giving Back Institute and takes place during Black Philanthropy Month.
For Nonprofits
Participating organizations must register each year. For 2026, registration is listed as June 19 through July 31. Review the official eligibility rules and current status directly on Give828.org.
