Black Philanthropy Month is Here.

Do you know what you’re doing yet?

This is a very exciting time of the year for Support Black Charities.

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), observed in August, was created in 2001 by its Founder Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, with the support of Reunity, formerly the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network.

Today, it is a global celebration and collaborative campaign to elevate African descent giving and funding equity. In 2011, it launched its first official global summit to commemorate the United Nations Year and Decade of People of African Descent.

Every year, the movement has gotten bigger and is now recognized by 35+ government bodies, including the United Nations, it has engaged at least 19 million people across 60 countries from its inception.

The theme for 2023 is ““Love In Action: Black Giving Worlds”.”

Black Giving Day rebranded Give8/28 is observed yearly on August 28.

This special day was made popular by the Young Black and Giving Back Institute who every year host a national fundraising event for Black-led nonprofits based in the United States through their Give8/28 initiative. They have successfully raised more than 300K$ over the last 4 years for

August 28 has a special significance for the Black community in the united States:

  • August 28, 1955: 14 yrs Emmett Till’s murder ignited the Civil Rights Movement
  • August 28, 1963: Dr. Martin Luther King, “I have a dream” in Washington DC.
  • August 28, 2005 : Hurricane Katrina devastated disproportionately the New Orleans Black residents
  • August 28, 2008: Senator Barack Obama accepted nomination for presidency.

Role of Philanthropy in the Black Community

  • It’s the key to a healthy, prosperous, and thriving Black ecosystem
  • It has mutual benefits for the pillars of the community: Its people, Black businesses, and Black organizations
  • It helps “keep the money in the family”
  • Improves the power of the “black dollar” by keeping spending inside the community

Role of SBC during Black Philanthropy Month

As an organization operating globally but based in Toronto, we (SBC) are looking to raise awareness about Black Philanthropy Month and Black Giving Day worldwide hoping that it grows to become an annual event that the entire Black community celebrates and participates in to make a difference.

SBC is an enthusiastic ambassador of the movement as its mission aligns perfectly with Black Philanthropy Month and Black Giving Day goals.

This year, SBC is launching its very first Global Black Philanthropy Initiative (GPBI)! - (Press release – July 31st, 2023)

GBPI is a month-long online fundraising event that harnesses the power of collective and focused giving, leveraging the emerging giving movement during Black Philanthropy Month (August) and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Are you a Business or Corporation?

During BPM2022, we are strongly encouraging all businesses but particularly Black businesses to purposely engage with local organizations to build relationship with the local community. Your contribution and your support are vital to the success and increases philanthropy for Black serving organizations.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is quickly becoming a crucial aspect of a brand’s perception to customers, employees, investors, stakeholders and for overall business success.

Essentially, it is defined as form of self-regulation that reflects a business’s accountability and commitment to contributing to the well-being of communities and society through various environmental and social measures.

Show you care for the Greater Good and build a socially responsible business! Here are some creative ways to implement CSR principles in your business practice during BPM2022 and beyond:

  • Create team building activities by participating in local causes or volunteering your time (and your staff’s time) to community events
  • Create and offer sponsorship opportunities to organizations which benefits your brand awareness
  • Implement cause marketing principals where a % of your revenue goes towards a cause
  • Involve your employees in selecting an organization from our directory to support in August (and beyond)
  • Start a fundraiser for your employees
  • Create matching donation initiative
  • Maximize your impact by donating to all organizations in a specific category/subcategory related to your business. (In recognition, SBC will feature your business on Social Media and our website)
